Busy week for Ram wrestlers

After multiple delays, Greene County began the wrestling season Dec. 15 with three duals at Iowa Falls. The Rams won 53-6 over Baxter, and lost a couple of close contests to Gilbert 43-34 and 39-37 to Iowa Falls-Alden.

Nevada and Interstate 35 were dual meet wrestling winners over Greene County on Thursday night in Nevada. Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the annual Tiger-Knight Wrestling tournament in Carroll Saturday was changed from an invitational at one site to dual meet tournaments at both Carroll High and Kuemper Catholic. Greene County was assigned to the event at Kuemper where the Rams went 4-0 to win the team title.

IOWA FALLS-ALDEN DUALS

Sophomore McKinley Robbins won all three matches by fall, including one in just 13 seconds. Brady Stauffer was 3-0 with two falls and a 3-0 decision. Gavin Scheuermann won all three of his matches by recording a fall, a technical fall, and a major decision. John Sprague was 3-0 with a fall and two forfeits, while Nathan Black was 3-0 with a forfeit and a pair of falls. James Currier was 3-0 with a forfeit and a pair of falls.

NEVADA TRIANGULAR

Greene County lost both matches Thursday in Nevada. Interstate-35 defeated the Rams 42-29 and Nevada won 36-21.

Rams going 2-0 on the night were Robbins, Black and Hoyt. Finishing 1-1 were Stauffer, Scheuermann and Schiltz, who trailed the ninth ranked wrestler in Class 1A, Sam Vonnahme, 6-0 and won by fall in 1:05.

TIGER-KNIGHT DUALS

The day started with a 51-18 Ram victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Greene County narrowly defeated the Knights by a 36-34 score. The Rams then won 46-36 over Westwood, Sloan before earning the tournament championship with a victory over Manson-Northwest Webster 39-36.

Greene County filled just 10 of the 14 weight classes. Four Rams went 4-0 in matches. They were McKinley Robbins, John Sprague, Brady Stauffer and Nathan Black.
